The MusicianShip stewards an ecosystem of free music education opportunities, which include our after-school and summer vocal and instrumental programs at DC public schools and Department of Parks and Recreation sites, The Washington Youth Choir, a Music Industry Workforce Development program, and a Music Therapy program. We also produce the annual Wammie Music Awards and The DC Funk Parade Celebration among other live performance activations. As a key staff member of the organization, the Director of Operations plays a crucial role in supporting the finance, operations, and management of (5) full-time staff and (35) contracted individuals.

The MusicianShip is a small but growing $1.475 million organization and seeks to engage a nonprofit professional who has previously worked within the youth development, arts education, and/or financial services spaces to help us grow our operations, programs, and overall revenues while managing a diverse culture of passionate mid-career professionals who possess the business or lived experiences in the communities we serve. Our ideal candidate will be comfortable navigating nonprofit finances, an effective communicator, and a self-starter, and can help improve the structure of our processes and overall operations.

Bottom Line: The Director is integral to the smooth and compliant operation of the organization, balancing financial management, operational oversight, staff supervision, and adherence to government grant processes and protocols. This position reports to the organization’s Executive Director & CEO

DUTIES & DELIVERABLES

The Director of Operations performs a wide range of duties, including the following:

General/Operations Responsibilities

  • Works with the Executive Director and members of the Leadership Team to execute the newly approved strategic plan, strategic funding goals, and budget
  • Works with the Executive Director to prepare materials for TMS Board of Directors. This will include information relating to the Fundraising, Governance, and/or Finance committees.
  • Responsible for oversight and management of all operations, programs, and services.
  • Ensure that all levels of the organization consistently produce data-driven outcome and regularly look for opportunities to improve the processes, programs, and best practices of The MusicianShip
  • Serve as primary liaison with Insperity, the organization’s co-employment partner, to ensure timely and accurate payroll processing, benefits disbursements and leave administration
  • Work with the Executive Director to review and approve annual insurance renewals

Management Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the supervision and management of direct report’s (2 full-time staff and 2 consultants) personnel activities, including recruiting, hiring, evaluating, training, promoting, terminating, and compensating personnel within the approved budget, guidelines, and policies of The MusicianShip
  • Provide adequate training and motivation to ensure the growth and development of staff expertise
  • Ensure staff onboarding is compliant with all grant and funder requirements
  • Monitor and assess staff needs through regular communications with team members by hosting focus groups, surveys, or reviews

Fiscal Responsibilities

  • Managing fiscal and budgetary matters of The MusicianShip, including programmatic and organizational budget preparation, basic accounting and financial reporting, long-range financial planning, forecasting, and audit plus /990 oversight.
  • Responsible for ensuring the on-time submission of grant funding requests, grant expenditures, and reports to funders in partnership with the Grants Manager.
  • Support the Executive Director in ensuring funds, physical assets, investments, and property are appropriately safeguarded and administered
  • Ensure timely submission of invoices to funding agencies and partner

Other duties may be assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Business, or equivalent experience
  • 8 -10 years of experience with nonprofits or small businesses with an operations, finance, leadership and entrepreneurial focus.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Keen interest in better understanding nonprofits and the ways they are funded
  • Previous in-depth knowledge and experience with the Quickbooks suite of financial tools and products
  • Demonstrated knowledge to self-manage, manage others, and collaborate in a hybrid work environment
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills and/or being able to operate in ambiguity
  • Adaptable and flexible to changing environments, as well as open to new ideas and feedback, and have an orientation towards participatory culture, racial equity, and being strengths-based.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Excellent budget tracking skills and fluid comfortability in developing and working with Excel and financial spreadsheets required.
  • Familiarity with Washington, D.C. government grants compliance and/or the procurement process
  • The preferred candidate should possess the ability to work on multiple projects effectively and efficiently, both independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are appreciated.
  • Familiarity with nonprofit-related or arts-center databases, experience with Little Green Light a plus.

Additional Information

The MusicianShip operates in a hybrid capacity with a central office located in Capitol Hill, SE Washington, DC. Preference will be given to those in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. This position may require up to 30% virtual work and 70% on-site work. Company internal communication processes are executed mostly through email, Hive, and video conference. This is a full-time exempt position with availability to work some evenings and weekends.
