Instrumental Music

Overview Instrumental Music

The MusicianShip provides free-of-charge instrumental music programs, primarily through a unique youth development lens—high-step marching band. Marching band is a distinct instrumental ensemble for several reasons:

  1. It lends itself to genre flexibility, allowing students to explore a variety of music genres, from songs they listen to on the radio to historic concert band pieces,
  2. It allows us to undertake high-impact youth development work, designed to support hundreds of students simultaneously,
  3. It is an in-your-face mobile exhibition of socio-emotional stability, improving both self-esteem and pride.

During the school year, we provide after-school programs in public and charter schools across the Washington, DC Metro area. Our goals are to improve students’ music aptitude, help facilitate pathways to higher-education and career pathways, and improve their socio-emotional capacity.

During the summer, we provide an all-city marching band program. This program is run in conjunction with accompanying summer tracks, which includes choir, music business, and music media.

The MusicianShip’s All-City Marching Band is a performing ensemble composed of DC-area students who play brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments, having performed for Miss America, Former U.S. Department of Education Secretaries, Arne Duncan and John King, Former Attorney General Eric Holder, Former White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough, the DC Department of Employment Services, Chef Carla Hall co-host of ABC’s “The Chew,” and many others.
