Funk Parade Recap
For seven years now, Funk Parade has brought the FUNK back to the U Street Corridor. Every year, we celebrate the music and arts that came out of those historic blocks in NW D.C. This year, we hosted a hybrid series of festivities that included both social-distanced in-person events and a number of virtual experiences.
Staying true to Funk Parade's mission, our week-long celebration raised over $1,900 to benefit The MusicianShip's music education programs for D.C.'s youth with the support of our incredible sponsors: National Endowment for the Arts, Humanities DC, DCCAH, The Ben’s Chili Bowl Foundation, Chuck Levin’s, District Bridges – U Street Main Street, and Aslin Beer Co.
With performances from the DMV's own renowned musical artists such as Oh He Dead, Roquois, Les the DJ, Reginald Cyntje, Elijah Balbed, and Kenny Sharp, this year’s theme highlighted the cultural, artistic, and social impact that Black Broadway has had on the D.C. community, and how the spirit of the historic corridor still lives on through us.
At Aslin Beer Day, nearly 200 attendees enjoyed a Funk Parade-themed brew produced by Aslin Beer Co., at The Black Broadway Mural Walk, a small VIP group experienced an interactive musical tour of 15 different murals in Black Broadway, and the Virtual Fest featured more than music, dance, and spoken word, we also presented the Funk U(niversity) panels and debuted the Funk Parade Documentary.
